Using Dish Soap to Prevent Grease Buildup in Kitchen Sink Drains
Regardless of if you have the skills to unclog a drain yourself or if you would require a plumber’s help, clogged drains are an annoyance that most people would rather not deal with. To help ensure you won’t need to deal with a clogged kitchen sink drain anytime soon, proactively fend off future grease buildup problems by following the four simple steps outlined below:
- Step 1. Remove any dishes, food solids, or other items from the sink.
- Step 2. Pull out the sink strainer (if you have one) and set it aside.
- Step 3. Squirt some dish soap down the drain, then wait a minute or two so the soap can move through the pipes and begin loosening any built-up grease.
- Step 4. Run hot water down the drain to wash away the dish soap and any grease buildup that may be present in the pipes.
There are two things to remember when using this method to keep your kitchen sink drains from becoming clogged with grease buildup. First, this method is best used as a preventative measure and likely won’t be helpful if your pipes are already badly clogged. Second, for this method to be effective, it should be performed on a fairly regular basis. Try to follow the preceding steps at least once per week to prevent grease buildup from clogging your kitchen sink drains in the future.
