IGAL UPDATES //

NORWAY AND FRIENDS by Mike Djordjevich (USA)

If you carefully examine the attached photograph, you’d be fooled in just thinking it is a bunch of people standing on the stairs.

Maybe that is what it shows but it isn’t representative of what was happening.

Friends, wine, skiing, walking, great food.  Just for openers.

Conversations which were filled with probing questions were plentiful.

I’ll let you guess what everyone wanted to talk about to an American.

Aside from that (we are telling everyone that we are Canadian from now on), Norway in February is exactly what one expects it to be: cold, snowy, cold, wonderful, cold, beautiful and cold. Did I say it was cold there?

IGAL friends are the polar opposite of cold. I must note that it never ceases to amaze me that the friendships which are forged through IGAL have been long lasting and meaningful. The people are substantial in character and friendliness, educated, qualified and, most importantly, super nice. But, not nice in a phoney, meaningless way; they are nice in a way that if one of us ran out of petrol in the middle of a snowy night they’d come out to help. If one of us needed money or whatever, they’d be there. One doesn’t come across that often and in many places.

It is something which is forged over time and in many places. Of course, on occasion, it involves drinking and sharing one’s life stories and the more time passes the stories shared are more substantial and meaningful. Then, the relationship morphs into sharing personal secrets and that is both fun and therapeutic.

That is what happened in Norway at the end of February.

Great slopes, wonderful walks, hugs, kisses and meals (all under the watchful and caring eyes of our hosts Bente and Karl) were extra. Icing on the cake, if you will.

I came, I saw, and my heart was conquered.
