TRAVELLING ALONG THE PANAMERICANA IN SOUTH AMERICA COLUMBIA by Frank Klaus (Germany)

Things were a bit bumpy for us at the beginning. We arrived to Cartagena but our ship was delayed. When it finally arrived, it wasn’t so easy to get our car out of the harbor. But we finally got it and drove to Shakira’s home town of Barranquilla. Not to listen to her but, rather, to organize gasoline supply for our trip. Here we found Julio’s Gas, which, apparently, is the best provider for overlanders in the north of Colombia. We also had the sea salt washed off our car here.

During the journey we spent various nights at campsites and petrol stations together with truck drivers.

If you’re wondering how we know all of this, statistics and places to go, there is an app for that, of course. It is called I Overlander and, alongside our navigation apps, it’s the most important source of information about places to sleep, petrol stations and other services along the roads all over the world.

Our route in Colombia then took us via Barichara (often described as the most beautiful city in Colombia) to the coffee triangle in Salento. A tour of a coffee plantation was a must here.

Our last destination in Colombia was the cathedral of Las Lachas near the border with Ecuador.

We waited there, as a police clearance certificate with an apostille is required for overlanders due to the state of emergency in Ecuador. However, the situation is both fluid and dynamic. We are following everything in a Panamericana WhatsApp group and hope that we will be allowed to enter Ecuador as quickly as possible.

Keep your fingers crossed for us.
