TRAVELLING ALONG THE PANAMERICANA IN SOUTH AMERICA-RUTA CUARENTA by Frank Klaus (Germany)

Back on Ruta Cuarenta

We crossed the Andes once again via Chile Cito and thus another strenuous dirt road and are back in Argentina. This also means that we are back on Ruta 40, which we now follow for a while through Patagonia to El Chalten. El Chalten is one of the tourist centers in Patagonia, known for its iconic mountain ‘Fitz Roy’ and is considered a hiker’s paradise.

After a stopover in Gobernador Gregors, in the middle of nowhere, which was dedicated to refueling and grocery shopping, we continued through Patagonia. Did we already tell you? The distances are enormous.

After a day of traveling, we reached El Chalten and set up camp just outside the town together with a few other overlanders. The topic of conversation was the best hiking routes.

The next day we set off and hiked to Laguna Capri to get the best view at Fitz Roy.

Fortunately, El Chalten is also well developed in terms of tourism, so we were able to choose between many different restaurants after the strenuous hike. The first thing we did was to point out to the people sitting next to us that we also speak German, so they shouldn’t blaspheme so loudly. Afterwards, we had a wonderful evening with our new travel buddies.
