El Paso de San Francisco
Chile and Argentina are different from the upper Latin American countries. You can already tell from the traffic. People are more relaxed on the road. So, we were more relaxed, too. As they say: “When in Rome…”
We headed south through the Atacama. On the other side of the Andes, in Argentina, the legendary Ruta 40 was now waiting for us. We decided to cross the Andes on the Paso de San Francisco. Over 500 kilometers without a petrol station and from the coast to over 4700 m above sea level. So, we filled up the tank, filled the fridge and even filled up the spare canister.
Off we went and one of the most beautiful days of this trip and of our lives began.
Great slopes, mountains in all colors, salt lakes, rivers with sulphureous water and magnificent views.
When we reached the Ruta 40 in Argentina on the second day of the trip in Cerro Negro, we regretted that we didn’t have enough time to simply drive back over this magnificent Andean pass.
