WHY I LIKE TO RUN by Mike Djordjevich (USA)

While I was at the university I lived in a dorm for four of the six years I studied. Doormen (hey, mine was a private college) said I never walked in or out of the building normally; always in a hurry, fast moving, running.

So, one reason for running, apparently, is the abundance of energy. Having it is not a blessing, it is a curse. Makes one constantly buzz around, probably making everyone around them feel uncomfortable. That, coupled with hastened speech (all part of the curse) benefitted me to the extent that I could always say more and do more work. More and more.

Then, I started running, as another means of shedding the extra energy and getting out of the office. Running everywhere and nowhere, with and without reason, in all kinds of weather conditions, half asleep and awake, alone and with others. It didn’t and it doesn’t matter. when and where.

Going places running is different than going by any other form of “transportation” including cycling. One sees things more closely and intimately. It is a luxury to absorb the intricate details of store fronts, building designs and get familiar with many new neighborhoods. It is a pleasure to do it in the unfamiliar, never before having been to cities. New impressions, new vistas and feelings. Doing it as part of organized races/runs is even better as the routes are carefully picked and, for the most part, picturesque.

And, when nothing is going on, nothing is organized and I am on a familiar ground of where my home or office are; then, just go to the track. Go around and around but imagine that I am in the desert, mountains, fields, crossing the oceans. Or, just thinking. About what? Mostly about the finish line which, for any of us, is varied and different. And, then, vanish in the fog.

There is a great German film from 1998, “Run Lola Run”, which visually describes the above.

See you at the track.
