Improve Your Health by Taking the 10,000 Steps Challenge by

If you want to improve your health but haven’t yet done anything to bring you closer to your goal, then maybe it’s time to also add a little challenge to your motivational plans.

What challenge? The 10,000 Steps Challenge!

The 10,000 Steps Challenge isn’t exactly new, but, if you are reading this, you may have tried it and not succeeded completely.

So, what is the 10,000 Steps Challenge?

Well, the 10,000 Steps Challenge is a motivational tool that can get you up and walking toward a more active and healthier lifestyle. Rather than being forced to do traditional exercises each day, the challenge gives participants the motivation to alter their overall lifestyle so they can add additional steps to their daily routines. Instead of taking the elevator, for instance, participants of the challenge may choose to take the stairs to increase their total steps for the day. Instead of getting off at their usual bus/train stop, participants may choose to get off a stop earlier to make more progress toward their daily goal of 10,000 steps.

The only device you’ll need to participate in the 10,000 Steps Challenge is a step counter. The best news about that is that you already have one of those on your smart phone. You have a smart phone, don’t you? Yes, it is that shiny box you keep staring at it all the time.

Though personal motivation is a big part of the 10,000 Steps Challenge, there is also an endless supply of online support groups to help give you an extra nudge should you find yourself less than motivated to reach your new daily fitness goals. Do you really need one of those to walk? We hope not, but, if you do, they are available.

To add a little excitement to the 10,000 Steps Challenge, there are even journeys you can join online that will track your progress along a virtual trek. Common journeys include virtual walks across the country or virtual hikes along actual hiking trails. There have even been virtual walks created that follow the fictional journeys of characters from popular literature like The Lord of the Rings. If simply reaching your step goal for the day is starting to lose its excitement and the online support groups aren’t motivating you as much as you’d like, then embarking on a virtual journey can certainly help keep you motivated toward achieving your ultimate fitness goals.

Because many people entering this challenge won’t yet be used to walking around so much, the typical goal of 10,000 steps per day might not always be attainable right away. As the average person only walks between 3,000 and 4,000 steps per day (with many people taking even fewer steps per day than that) an immediate jump to 10,000 daily steps is often unrealistic. If you find yourself unable to reach 10,000 steps per day, don’t give up. Instead, try to make slight increases to your daily average until you’re able to finally reach your ultimate step goal.

So, what are you waiting for? Get yourself a step counter so you can join the many others who are currently walking toward a healthier lifestyle. By taking part in the 10,000 Steps Challenge, you’ll be doing more than just thinking about improving your health. You’ll be actively pursuing a healthier lifestyle—one that your future self will surely thank you for.
